Given away to a convent with a dark secret at a young age, Bree suffers years of abuse and fear. A chain of events and a prophesied war with demons from another dimension start her amazing journey of self discovery as she learns she is one of the last left of an ancient house thought to be extinct.
There was a lot going on in this book. The world is very complex with interesting magical and political systems. That being said though, this is a bit of a double edged sword. This book is the start of a new series by this author that takes place in the world introduced in her previous trilogy. I love that the author but so much into the development of this world and it shows. You don’t have to read the other series to get what is going on, but there are many references to the events in the other series that were a bit lost on me. This doesn’t take a way from this narrative at all, but I did feel like I was missing information. Certain things I had to kind of piece together throughout the book, and a couple of major points to the story didn’t connect with me until well after the fact. Again, while I wish I had known these things going in, I do think you can start with this book and enjoy it.
I really liked the cast of characters, and it was a pretty big cast. It did take me a minute to to remember all of the couples and such, but once I did I enjoyed them all. Everyone had interesting personalities and really served a purpose in driving the narrative forward. Bree especially was fun. Her personal journey was exciting to witness and the author does a great job of really making us want to cheer her on. Her naivety and and resilience felt appropriate for what she was going through. Savannah’s parts are where my wish for context from the previous books comes in. As she was the main character of the other books, much of her chapters reference these events that I mostly was ignorant to. As a character though she was also entertaining. Her chapters balanced Bree’s chapters out very well.
This book is full of so much action and magic, and I loved that. This parts were very well written and the other again shows how much was put into the structure of this world. While there was a lot, I didn’t feel like it bogged down the story. All of these scenes felt like they served the plot and really built things up for the coming book to wrap up the overall plot of the duology.
My only issue with the story was how the romantic aspect played out. I loved who Bree ended up with, but how it happened felt a bit weak to me. I understood the reasoning why her love interest wanted to distance herself from a chance at a relationship, but when that changed it felt far too sudden. I was actually a bit surprised that the character changed her opinion so suddenly. It felt out of nowhere and with very little actually build up other than the character just knowing that Bree had feelings for her. I didn’t feel there was anything that would have made her change her mind the way she did.
Overall a really entertaining and epic fantasy. I do recommend reading the authors others books first, but if this sounds like your thing you will easily get invested in this one.
