Mortal Follies

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Maelys Mitchelmore is a woman coming into high society inflicted with a curse. She enlists the help of Georgianna Landrake, despite the rumor that she is a witch. As the nature of the curse escalates, Maelys faces life or death obstacles all while risking her heart.

This book was so much fun. The narration style was unique and I genuinely don’t think it would have the same effect. This story is narrated by a character not technically involved in the situation. She was a perfect narrator, having no emotional connection to any of the characters. I did not know this going in but was pleasantly surprised.

Every character in this book, including the narrator, was incredibly witty and fun to read. Maelys and Georgianna are great together. Maelys had interesting character development, both in dealing with her curse and her feelings for Georgianna. Her naivety is also presented as an obstacle for her to overcome in a really compelling way. Georgianna in turn is Maelys’s opposite in so many ways, and this worked so well for the story. The back and forth between them brought the emotional tension up in a way that flowed naturally. There was a great mix of romantic tension and humor between them.

One of the things I really liked about this book is the fact that once the big obstacle was more or less figured out, the source of the curse, this wasn’t the end of the story. There were still other complications to figure out. Things definitely were not sugar coated and I personally love this in a story. Things in life can be messy and this narrative was a great example of that. I also love that magic, and magical creatures are just a normal part of life in this book. It isn’t over the top and comes of a bit dark in places. The author handled this very well and it was so well balanced through the story.

I genuinely think if this book didn’t have the unique narrator aspect it would have felt completely different, even though it is the same plot. This to me is a huge selling point because the narrator was a fun character all on her own. I highly recommend this story for something quirky, dark, fun, and an all around entertaining read.
