Aurora (a beast shapeshifter) rescues Evie (an avian shifter) from danger, entangling their lives together. The two must travel together to get Evie home, learning more about one another and growing closer. Both must decide what it truly is they want for their lives as they work through their pasts and look toward their futures.
I listened to the audiobook version of this one, read by Abby Craden. She did a fantastic job of bringing these characters to life. Each voice was unique and felt realistic to how I imagine they would sound. Quality of the narration and production was excellent.
This book had such nice world building. While I liked the characters a lot too, the world building was handled so well that I think it might be my favorite aspect. The world they live in was very unique and the author did a great job of getting us familiar with it without bogging down the story with too much exposition. This is one of those times where I was left with a few questions, but in a way that makes me want another book that expands it more, not that anything was confusing. I feel like the author has so much to work with, but at the same time this can easily just be a stand alone as well.
As for the characters, I really enjoyed their personalities. We spend a great deal of time with just the two of them as they travel and get to know each other, so the audience getting to know them feels like it flows very naturally. The romantic tension and build up feels good and believable. Aurora was a lot of fun because she had so much depth. Lot’s of trauma to work through and secrets that really shape her personality. Evie was such a great counterpart to her. She was also had a lot of strength to her personality, but in a different way than Aurora.
This is one of those books too that has a very plot threads working at the same time and some that don’t become apparent until you get to certain points of the narrative. The author did a really good with the pacing and keeping the reader engaged the whole way through. At no point did the story feel tedious or like it dragged longer than it should have. Every event through the narrative felt relevant to the natural progression through the book.
This was such an engaging book that gives the read so much to enjoy. Fun characters, deep plot, and excellent world building.
