Callisto 2.0

by Susan English

My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

Callisto, or Calli, is a physicist who takes the job offer of a lifetime: working in an space station orbiting the moon with the opportunity to focus on her life’s work. She learns that the space station is full of other like-minded women with a passion for their specific scientific fields. All the while though, drama is brewing in the background that will change the course of all their lives.

I have some mixed feelings about this book. On one hand the premise was interesting, but on the other, it took so long to get there. I understand the author wanted us to really get to know Calli and her journey of self discovery/improvement, but I feel like so much of this just dragged on a bit too much. For much of the book I sort of felt like nothing was really happening.

I enjoyed the ensemble cast of characters on the space station. We get to know many women all living in close proximity to each other. Everyone was unique in personality as well as scientific know-how. It’s clear the author did her research when it comes to making everyone feel realistic and knowledgeable. At times I again felt like I was getting to much of a science lesson, but I could overlook this as much of it was there to get Calli up to speed. Calli’s romantic interest with one character later in the story did feel a bit sudden though. There wasn’t any build up to it, just a love at first sight sort of appeal.

The plot really doesn’t kick into gear until nearly the end of the book. As we learn all about the station and its progress along with Calli, we get hints here and there of a more nefarious plot happening in the background. These hints are so few and far between though that they don’t feel like they help push the narrative along well. Calli is also far too naive to pick up on what feels obvious, so these plot points get forgotten quickly in her mind. I just felt like this dragged a bit too much. Near the end when things get revealed and characters have to make a big decision the story does get genuinely interesting, but nothing comes of this until I’m assuming the next book. Book 1 of this series is almost entirely set up for the plot to really get rolling in the next one.

Overall I enjoyed the concept, but it moved a bit slowly and you will need to be dedicated to reading the rest f the series to get satisfaction.
