While the Heroes, The Chosen Ones, and the ones who save the world are battling evil there are the rest of the people who just have to get through the day. Michael and his friends and family are these people. They live their lives, deal with their problems, and just try to make it through high school so they can really start their lives. The shockwaves from world ending events the Chosen Ones deal with is just another obstacle along the way.
This book was such an interesting change of pace and perspective. I’ve personally always been interested in the average “non-chosen” people involved in an epic story. This book delivers on that flawlessly.
The story follows a group of average teens just trying to get to graduation so they can move on to college and start really living their lives. I really liked each of these characters. Michael, the main protagonist we follow along with, is dealing with some very relatable real live problems. Family drama, relationship woes, and tense friendships are the sorts of things everyone deals with, but it was interesting to see how it was dealt with while a larger, literal world ending event is happening in the background of all of this. It was interesting to see things from this side and how the Chosen Ones and their battles affect the lives of those not actually involved in any of it.
All of the core cast members were unique and interesting, all having these same real live complications. The entire plot of the book was this. No need for the big climactic event that was, again, happening in the background. The was significant importance placed on how these events affected their lives as well. Not so much as blatantly pointed out, but the author did really well at making these situations the starting points for life changing decisions these characters made based on what they went through.
The author also gives us a small taste of those big “could-be-the-end-of-the-world” events that are happening as well. Enough to keep up with it, but as this is not about those people, we don’t get the bigger details or all the answers. I really liked this. It was interesting knowing where these events came from even if we don’t get to know exactly why. That’s not the point.
This was a fun read with a fresh perspective that highlights more than just the “important” people in a story.
