Running away from her past, Rosemary Harper joins the eclectic crew of the ship, Wayfarer. During a particularly long and lucrative job the crew was hired for Rosemary learns more about herself, the galaxy, and the beings who live in it.
I absolutely fell in love with this book! The thing that really works for the story is the characters. Every character is so well written and really important to the narrative. The author really does the found family trope justice here.
While Rosemary is our introduction into the crew of the Wayfarer she can’t really be considered the main character. Every crew member has time in the spotlight, each pushing the narrative along equally. Everyone contributes to the overall plot, but the real reason to read is to see every character dealing with their own individual obstacles. Everyone had something they were dealing with and their own backstories that made them who they are.
The plot was handled in a very interesting way. The crew does have a specific mission they are trying to accomplish, but the bulk of the story is told with the random stops and encounters they have along the way. This is also where a lot of the individual characters get their time to shine. We get to see several of the crew in their home environments or in places they are generally the most comfortable outside of the ship. Again, because this story is so character driven these were fantastic moments to see.
The world building is also quite massive in this book. The author does a great job of informing us all about the politics and rules of the universe in this future plot without it feeling like a monologue or pilling on too much information at once. The information is presented to us organically. Rosemary is also important in this aspect as well. While she understands the politics, she isn’t as familiar with the various species we encounter through the story. She again is our gateway to these aspects of the story.
This is a fantastic book with great characters that push the exciting plot forward. Highly recommend for fans of science fiction and character driven narratives.
