Such Pretty Flowers

by K.L Cerra

My Rating: 3 of 5 stars

Holly is unable to let go of the unusual circumstances surrounding her brother’s death. She’s sure his florist girlfriend Maura knows more than she’s saying. Deciding to investigate herself Holly attempts to get closer to Maura, but soon finds herself drawn to the other woman and becoming entangled in her life of flowers, high class friends, and secrets.

The eerie and unsettling tone of this book carries all the way from start to finish. It opens with a bit of a mystery as to the sudden death of Holly’s brother and quickly escalates from there. It’s a bit of a roller coaster. Admittedly as a character, Holly doesn’t have anything all that special about her, including struggling to even afford to live on her own. I actually liked this about her. She’s very unassuming and extremely easy to relate to.

The supporting characters felt somewhat minor. They were important in the moment to push the story along, but often felt like they weren’t relevant after that moment. I didn’t really feel like any one supporting character carried through the narrative entirely. There were a couple however that had more importance than others, but we never really get a chance to connect to them. I personally would have liked more because I like narratives that really depend on character development, but this wasn’t a very character driven plot so realistically it wasn’t what was needed.

For the most part I liked the plot. It floated just on the edge of uncomfortable the entire time. Maura was a great character and I genuinely did not know how I felt about her. I did sort of feel like Holly’s obsession was a bit over exaggerated. I was really interested in seeing that develop, but I don’t think it was executed well. The plot was predictable, but I didn’t mind that because I liked the concept. I do think the author sort of drops the ball though near the end. The “science” in the explanation of why things happened they way they did felt like a really big stretch.

I do think this book is worth reading and the author does such a great job of making the reader feel tense throughout the whole thing. The end is moderately underwhelming but the journey to get there is worth it.
