The Babysitter Lives

by Stephen Graham Jones

Narrated by Isabella Star LaBlanc

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Charlotte is a teenage babysitter ready for an easy job babysitting twins and study for her SATs. Things don’t go as planned though and Charlotte is in for much more than she expected. The house, and it’s occupants, have other plans for her.

It’s interesting to note that the only way to enjoy this book is through audio. There is no print version. This works well though because the narrator did a fantastic job. She really set the mood and kept the tension and suspense feeling very real throughout the whole thing. Her tone was perfect both for the main character and supporting cast. Production quality was also very smooth in this book.

This is one of those books that starts very unassuming but goes off the rails very quickly. I was expecting some sort of supernatural element and this book definitely delivers. I loved this sort of limbo concept that is introduced to the narrative. It escalates quickly to the point of becoming very bizarre in the best possible way.

I really liked Charlotte as a character. She was very well developed and had just the right amount of backstory included that added relevance to the plot. The children she babysits, Ron and Desi, are also fun for the somewhat brief amounts of time we get with them. Additional characters as well are fantastic in the story, but I’m going to remain vague about many of the details. I truly felt that the twists and surprises really elevated this book and need to be experienced first hand.

I highly recommend this book if you enjoy strange horrors with interesting plots and twists. It was a fantastic story to listen to with a narrator that really adds to the story. A wonderful experience that left me reeling after.
