On a trip to a farmer’s market Rosemary (Ro) meets Ash. She sweet, beautiful and extremely self sufficient. Ro quickly becomes obsessed and in addition begins to have feelings for this intriguing woman, something that has never happened to her before. As things grow between them Ro starts to realize things might not be exactly as they seem.
It’s no exaggeration to say this might very well be my favorite book I read this year. This novella was everything I hoped for. I won’t go into too much detail because every aspect and secret needs to be experienced first hand.
The characters in this book were so well written. We follow Ro throughout the story. She is interesting if a bit naive, but that works perfectly for the plot. She goes a bit against her better judgement in the face of a totally new experience. It puts us both in the camp of “I would be the same way” and “Why are you so dumb?” You would think this would make for a frustrating read, but it worked so well. Ash was also fantastic. She is such a unique character. She is so sweet and self sufficient, you can’t help but be intrigued by her. At the same time she’s very mysterious and it makes her a little hard to figure out. Even with all that we still want to say yes to everything she says, just like Ro.
The story was short and sweet and this is one of those few times where I think it really works. I think it would drag or lose its focus if it was a longer story. The story feels slow, but in an intentional kind of way. It slowly builds making us feel unsettled without us really being able to pinpoint why. This is also the sort of plot where you can start to sort of figure out what is coming and still be very shocked by it. I wouldn’t call it predictable as I still feel I was surprised by a few aspects.
I LOVED this book and highly recommend it to anyone who likes slow building horror that makes you just feel unease the whole time.
