A repair crew in space stumbles across a cruise liner that has been missing for 20 years. Claire and her crew know they’ve made the discovery of a lifetime and are on the verge of being very rich. But something isn’t quite right and the mystery of what happened all those years ago may prove to be deadly.
This was a fantastic book. Everything about the events in the first half of the book is incredibly unsettling and genuinely gave me the creeps if I was reading alone. The mystery of what happened to the cruise was one of those things that you can almost predict, but still be just a little off by the time the big reveals happen. This really worked for the narrative. The eerie vibe seemed to be more the point than the ‘why’ of it all.
The various characters both in the crew we start with and not were all fun and written with interesting and unique personalities. They fit common tropes while also being perfect to compliment the narrative. Claire was probably the weakest link. This was unfortunate since she was the main character. The only real issue there was with this was that her backstory felt like it was being shoved at us in a very repetitive way. We are constantly reminded about her trauma, and while yes we got a bit more info about it every time, it still felt like it slowed down the pacing of the narative a wee bit.
The second half of the book does become significantly less spooky as the action aspect starts becoming a bigger factor a the mystery brought to light. This wasn’t bad, but I admit I missed the unsettling feeling by the end.
Even with its flaws this was still a great book. Would absolutely recommend to horror fans.
