The No-Girlfriend Rule

by Christen Randall

Narrated by Natalie Naudus

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

With her boyfriend’s very dedicated tabletop roleplay group having a no-girlfriends allowed rule, Hollis decides to find a different group to play Secrets & Sorcery with. She hopes that if she can show him she can play the game that she will get to join the group. Her new all-girls group however shows to her that she doesn’t need to prove anything to anyone and opens her eyes to new and exciting possibilities.

Natalie Naudus is a fantastic narrator! She did so well with this book. With a pretty good sized female cast it can be hard to really tell people apart when speaking, but she absolutely nailed it! Everyone sounded unique and really fit their personalities that are established.

This was such a cute book. I have to admit I did not want to stop when life obligations got in the way. The author did a really great job of handling the stresses of high school, and senior year at that, for someone like Hollis. Her anxiety was handled very respectfully. I also felt like I could have gotten into the book just as easily if I had not gone in already having a practiced understanding of tabletop roleplay games. The author gives just enough information that none who wasn’t familiar wouldn’t be lost while also not droning on and pulling away from the plot. This book had some really impactful highs and lows too with a genuinely tense climax.

Hollis was a great character to follow through the plot. She had just the right amount of relatable flaws that made seeing her overcome them feel good. Honestly though this was a terrific ensemble of characters, both the group you are meant to like and the ones you really weren’t. It was a nice balance and showed the duality of her situation very well.

It needs to be noted too that the characters each of the girls played in the game were also a lot of fun. I genuinely don’t know if I enjoyed the overall book or the S&S plot more. The author essentially doubled her characters and still kept everything feeling fresh and exciting.

I can highly recommend this book for a feel good and at times emotional time.
