A castle under siege. A community trapped and running out of food. As things get desperate and choices need to be made a miricle arrives. Food aplenty arrives alongside a higher power and suddenly the forces waiting outside the walls are all but forgotten. But three very different women have suspicions and are determined to find a way out. And survive.
I don’t even know where to begin with this book. It was so unsettling in the best possible way. It is grotesque and downright filthy at times, but this book fantastically highlights the beauty in it. The horror aspect of the narrative settles you into one type of fear, only to blindside you with the true horror.
The plot was fascinating. At times, it dips into the nonsensical and defies logic, but this really works in its favor. You never really feel the need to make everything make sense. It just does. Everything builds like a fever dream, and it’s so, so satisfying. Disturbing, but satisfying.
While everything about the book was amazing, it’s really the main characters that drive the plot. Each of the three women are so different from each other. The narrative shifts between the three, and each time their unique voices stand out. Their dynamic elevates the plot to a new level.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who likes visceral, grotesque horror that doesn’t hold back.
