Teen twins Iris and Piper couldn’t be more different, but that doesn’t explain why Piper is kidnapped outside of a local movie theater in the middle of the day and not Iris. Worst of all, no one but their grandmother seems to belive it even happened, labeling Piper as a runaway. Years later, Iris is still working toward finding the truth, no matter the cost.
I wanted to like this book, and for the first 3/4 of it, I did. The author has a fun way of presenting the story. Chapters jump back and forth between events of the past and Iris’s life currently in the story. I did enjoy the way she handled this. Facts were presented when needed in a natural way. This did allow for a few surprise moments and reveals throughout the narrative. These were engaging up until that last 25%.
I did like Iris as a protagonist. She was extremely driven toward her goal. She did however lose focus pretty quickly once an attractive man was involved. That was a bit disappointing. I enjoyed several of the side characters as well, particularly her grandmother. She was extremely entertaining when she was fired up and being protective.
Near the end of the book when the big reveal moment happened though is when my enjoyment tanked. I won’t go into details, partly because I got extremely lost. Everything seemed very far out of left field and seemed to be written with the intention of making the reader and Iris feel stupid for not seeing it before. A lot of characters are suddenly revealed as not being who they say they are, and new ones introduced overall. The fact that certain people were hiding in plain sight in a government institute seemed highly unlikely and not at all believable. I’m still not entirely sure exactly what happened.
Overall it was an interesting read for the most part, but the ending was unsatisfactory and comes very close to ruining the good parts of the book.
