Gwen wants to be a knight. Isobelle wants to not be a tournament prize. Niether of them think they’ll be able to get what they want, until Isobelle comes up with a plan. Disquised as Sir Gawain, Gwen enters the tournament , both women hoping for a victory that could ensure Isobelle’s freedom. In theory. Their plans start to crumble at the same time they begin getting closer.
This was such a fun book. The humor had a very modern feel to it despite being medieval fantasy fiction. I loved all the characters and their interactions. That alone kept me hooked.
The two main characters, Gwen and Isobelle, worked very well together. They had a very opposites attract dynamic. I really liked that Isobelle was not a naive, stuck-up princess like I was expecting. This was not a plot point to the narrative, and it really works for it. This concept also comes across with Isobelle’s companions that she’s often seen with. Each of them also had a very unique personality and complemented the narrative well. Gwen had a lot of growth through the book, arguably more than Isobelle. It was inspiring to watch her overcome fears and other obstacles.
The slow burn romance was just the right pace for the story. It felt very natural for these two with equal parts yearning and confusion.
I was also very pleasantly surprised by a couple of twists to the plot that I didn’t see coming. I was happy to be wrong, and these moments felt like they made sense. I never got the sense that I was being led on or misinformed just for shock value.
I both liked and disliked the ending. To be fair, it makes complete sense and I don’t think the book could have even ended any other way. I think personally, I just wanted to see more because I wasn’t ready to let go. I highly recommend this book if any aspect of it at all appeals to you.
