How to Sell a Haunted House

by Grady Hendrix

Narrated by Jay Aaseng & Mikhaila Aaseng

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Louise is hit suddenly with the news of her parents deaths. Forced to leave her daughter with her ex-husband, she returns to her childhood home to take care of things. She doesn’t plan on having to deal with her deadbeat brother who she learns everything was left to. Tensions run high between the siblings and the two begin to uncover secrets long forgotten as well as a “friend” neither thought they would have to deal with again.

I genuinely feel like the audio version of this book really added something to the unsettling nature of the story. Mikhaila does the majority of the narrating and she did a wonderful job. Though Jay only narrates one chapter from the brother’s point of view This really elevated the experience. The brother’s emotions really came through this way. While I have no doubt that book is wonderful read on paper/ebook, I think I enjoyed it more as an audiobook.

This was such a good book. I definitely didn’t expect things to go in the direction they did. The creepy aspect of the whole experience was on a higher level than the actual horror of the whole story and this was a very good thing. The entire book was unsettling. The plot becomes more and more complex as it progresses, but it never hits the point of feeling too over the top or convoluted. It hits a very good balance and I found not predict where things were going or the answers as they were revealed. Though I do feel the story falls off just a little bit near the end as a few somewhat silly things happen that, for me, broke up the tension a bit. This was absolutely not enough to kill any enjoyment I had.

I liked the main character Louise a lot too. It was fun following along with her as she discovered things and dealt with some very difficult situations. Her brother was a great character in his way too. I love how the author takes us along with both of them and changes our opinions, particularly on the brother. We start to sympathize with him and understand his behavior. Every character is important in some way which actually came as a bit of a shock to me as I learned this throughout the narrative.

This was a great suspenseful and creepy thriller. Anyone even remotely interested in the horror or suspense genre should absolutely give this one a read.
