The sudden appearance of an enemy long thought safely locked away begins an epic adventure for four strangers from around the world who will do whatever it takes to save their world.
I struggle where to begin with this book simply because there is just SO MUCH here. This book is epic on such a grand scale. The story takes place from the perspective of four different characters from around the fictional fantasy world the author created. I adore this concept. Each character has their own issues and challenges to face, but as they do their plots intertwine with one another. This is such a delicate device to span across 800+ pages. The author does this fantastically.
What really makes this book though is the characters. Each of the four main protagonists is so fantastic to follow. Each character was unique with their own voice and an equally important role in the plot. Their development story lines felt just as exciting to read as the overarching plot of the world. I found myself getting physically excited when some characters would be awesome badasses and feeling like I was punched in the gut when they would suffer losses or heartbreak.
Because this book is massive with a massive plot, there are a lot of names that are used, both people and places. I’m often not great at keeping track of these kinds of details, but I didn’t find that to be difficult in this case. It didn’t take me long to have these details committed to memory. This book is also the prequel to an equally massive story, taking place roughly 500 years before the events in the first book, Priory of the Orange Tree (Also fantastic please read it). Again because I have trouble keeping track, I personally can’t touch a great deal on things in this book that are built on in Priory. It was just too long ago since I read it. But I can say you don’t have to have read Priory. Obviously A Day of Fallen Night is a prequel, so this makes sense. I just feel like someone coming into these books fresh will get just as much out of it as someone who knows what is going to happen later.
This was just a fantastic book with so much action, adventure, sorrow, love, and tragedy. Anyone with even the slightest interest in fantasy would be absorbed.
