Middlegame

by Seanan McGuire

Narrated by Amber Benson

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Roger and Dodger are twins, not quite human, separated at birth to be raised on opposite sides of the country. When they learn about each other’s existence the world as we know it shifts on it’s access. The twins begin to learn the origin of their lives, the reason they exist, and what it means for humanity.

I had the joy of listening to the audio version of this book narrated by Amber Benson. She did an amazing job. Each character came through in the inflections she used and the tones. I was particularly happy with how she voiced the villainous characters. Certain characters that where meant to come off threatening always felt scary and unsettling every time narrative focused on them.

I have to admit, this is one of the hardest reviews I think I’ve ever written. I’m not even sure where to begin with this book. It’s so out there and chaotic with it’s narrative. That author did this in such a fantastic way though. This book was such an experience, but it’s so incredibly difficult to explain. This is genuinely one of those stories you just have to experience for yourself.

I have to admit though, I do feel you really need to pay attention. The chaotic nature of the story does make it easy to get lost if you aren’t careful. I don’t really find this to be a negative thing about it though. Absorbing everything this book presents you to the fullest is part of the experience.

In addition to the twisty narrative, I really liked all the characters in this book too. Rodger and Dodger are so fun, and even more so when they are actually interacting with one another. They quite literally balance each other out. The antagonists and supporting cast all have very well defined personalities too. They also had development that was intriguing to see happen.

As I said before, this book is an experience and if you’re anything like me, it will lead you down a bit of a rabbit hole. If you enjoy a narrative that will completely consume you, I highly recommend this book.
