Comfort Me with Apples

My Rating: 5 of 5 stars

Sophia’s life is perfect. Perfect Husband, perfect community. But, something doesn’t quite seem right. Her perfect husband is away a lot on business and the neighbors seem like they might be hiding something. Maybe everything isn’t as perfect as she thought?

This is another book that I decided to read on a whim and went into it completely blind. I’m very glad I did. The book is a pretty short novella that packs a lot in its pages.

Immediately something feels off. As you read you notice so many things that make you feel unease. This is compounded by the fact that the protagonist Sophia doesn’t seem to think any of what’s happening is odd. At least not at first. Then the narrative ramps up to full speed.

I loved this book a lot. The confusion in the beginning was almost a bit off-putting. I reread a couple of passages to make sure I read it right. That stop very quickly though. Not the oddness about what was happening, but when Sophia also starts noticing the uncanny factor of things around her you start to realize this was intentional. I was immediately drawn in because the author does a great job of dangling hints and enticing bits that make you want to find out exactly what is going on.

This is the sort of book that I feel really benefits from as little knowledge as possible when starting, so I won’t going into much detail about the plot of ending. Worth noting though that it was extremely satisfying. The short length of this book worked perfectly for the narrative.
