A Sorceress Comes to Call

by T. Kingfisher

My Rating: 4 of 5 stars

Cordelia’s life has never truly been her own. Her mother controls her every move, demanding she keep no secrets and using her sorcery to Cordelia to remain silent and motionless for hours on end. All of that changes when her mother sets her sights on a well to do bachelor, inserting herself into his household. Cordelia gets a small taste of freedom and what an actual family can be, but her mother is hatching a sinister plan for her own gain.

This book was such a treat. Very much a fairytale that doesn’t hide from the dark nature of it. The whole story keeps you on edge as Cordelia’s mother just keeps doing worse and worse things, and Cordelia herself tries to fix things without her finding out.

Cordelia really was a great main character. She’s very sweet and you just can’t help but feel bad for her. She is made to suffer a lot through the story. It always seems like every step forward for her is two steps back. Her mother, Evangeline, is a terrible mother and a very convincing villain. The ensemble of characters in Cordelia’s corner very beautifully balance out the good vs. dark dynamic. Evangeline isn’t without allies as well though too.

What really elevates this story to dark fantasy is the nature of Evangeline’s powers. Her ability to control her daughter’s body is established early on and is truly terrifying. Once you learn that Cordelia can be stuck with no control over herself it really sinks in how alone she feels and that she’s constantly on edge. That loss of bodily autonomy hits a very deep fear in a lot of people and makes reading this book uncomfortable, but in a way that makes the journey that much better in the end. And a very satisfying ending it was. There were a few moments when you really weren’t sure how they would manage. The author does such a great job of keeping you on edge until the very end.

Overall this was a fun story and a great dark fairytale. I would definitely recommend this to anyone who enjoys fantasy that’s fairly small scale and just a little bit on the dark and twisty side.
